Chapter 9 - The Signature

The real estate closing took place in a pristine, modern office building downtown.

The developer handed me a smooth, heavy pen to sign the final transfer documents.

My hand shook slightly, not from fear, but from the overwhelming weight of the moment.

I signed my name exactly where the colorful sticky notes pointed.

The developer smiled warmly and slid a certified cashier’s check across the glass table.

It was made out for exactly two hundred and ten thousand dollars.

I stared at the numbers, visualizing the bright, sterile lights of the operating room where Lily would be saved.

I immediately handed the check directly to Mr. Sterling, who was sitting beside me.

He deposited it straight into the irrevocable medical trust we had established.

The money belonged to the hospital now, completely untouchable by anyone else.

As we walked out to the elevator, my phone began to buzz in my pocket.

It was a text message from David, filled with vile curses and desperate threats.

He promised that he would make me pay for ruining his life.

I deleted the message and permanently blocked his number without a second thought.

He was completely powerless now.
