Chapter 4 - The Vulture's Visit

I returned to my empty house and carefully locked every single deadbolt on the doors.
The silence used to suffocate me, but today, it felt like a protective shield.
Suddenly, a heavy, aggressive pounding echoed from my front porch.
I looked through the peephole and saw Sarah’s husband, Mark, standing there with a fake smile.
I kept the security chain attached and opened the door just a few inches.
Mark tried to push his foot into the doorframe, but I quickly shoved it back.
He claimed he was just checking on me because Sarah was too emotional to come herself.
He smoothly suggested that we could drop the assault charges if I simply signed over half the money.
He actually had the audacity to call it a fair compromise.
I stared at his slick, greedy face and felt a surge of absolute disgust.
I told him that the police had already served David with a strict restraining order.
I warned him that if he did not step off my porch, he would be getting one too.
Mark’s fake smile completely vanished, replaced by a dark, threatening scowl.
He told me that I was a foolish old woman who was making a very dangerous mistake.
