Chapter 17 - The Sentencing

David’s criminal trial was incredibly short and brutally efficient.
Because of his prior gambling offenses and the violent nature of the burglary, the judge showed zero mercy.
I sat in the front row of the courtroom, wearing a nice floral dress, watching the proceedings calmly.
David wore a bright orange jumpsuit, his arrogant posture completely destroyed.
The judge sentenced him to seven years in a state penitentiary for felony burglary and assault.
As the bailiffs clamped the heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists, he looked back at me one last time.
He finally realized that his toxic greed had cost him his entire future.
I gave him a small, polite nod, acknowledging the finality of our severed relationship.
I did not feel any sadness or regret as they led him away through the heavy wooden doors.
He was exactly where he belonged, and I was finally safe from his violence.

The toxic branches of my family tree had been completely pruned away.
I walked out of the courthouse and into the bright, warm sunshine of a brand new day.
