Chapter 1 - The Ambulance Ride

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the dark street outside my modest home.

The paramedics carefully strapped me onto the cold stretcher.

Every tiny bump in the road sent a blinding wave of agony through my fractured collarbone.

The police officer sat in the back of the ambulance with a notebook in his hand.

He asked me if I wanted to press formal assault charges against my own son.

I closed my eyes, letting the tears fall silently down my wrinkled cheeks.

I told the officer exactly what had happened in that narrow hallway.

I explained how David had shoved me into the wall like I was nothing more than a stranger.

I explained how Sarah had stood there like a stone statue, waiting for her share of the gold.

The officer looked at me with deep pity, assuming I was just another abused, elderly mother.

He did not know about the heavy, dark secret that I carried in my heart.

He did not know that the two hundred and ten thousand dollars was not for my retirement.

I was not hoarding the money out of greed or spite toward my children.

I was protecting a life that they had completely forgotten about.

I looked at the officer and firmly stated that I wanted a restraining order immediately.

I was done playing the role of the silent, suffering victim.

They thought they could break my bones and take my dignity.

They were about to learn that a mother protecting her ultimate secret is the most dangerous force on earth.
