Chapter 8 - The Hearing

The emergency competency hearing was scheduled for a rainy Thursday morning at the county courthouse.
David arrived wearing a cheap, wrinkled suit, glaring at me from across the aisle.
Sarah looked exhausted, refusing to make eye contact with anyone in the room.
Their expensive lawyer stood up and tried to paint me as a confused, grieving widow.
He claimed I was squandering the family estate in a state of deep mental decline.
My attorney, Mr. Sterling, confidently stood up and approached the judge.
He presented three years of my flawless tax returns and bank statements.
He showed the judge exactly how I had survived on my own through pure, grueling hard work.
Then, he dropped the ultimate bombshell on the courtroom.
He presented the undeniable proof of David’s illegal gambling debts and Sarah’s impending foreclosure.
The judge looked at the documents and his expression hardened into pure, icy disgust.
He looked down at my children as if they were the scum of the earth.
He stated that the only people in this room suffering from mental defects were the two greedy children attempting to rob their elderly mother.

The judge completely dismissed their injunction and cleared the path for the real estate sale.
I closed my eyes and let out a massive, shuddering breath of relief.
