Chapter 16 - The Shattered Daughter

Sarah tried to speak, but only a pathetic, choked sob escaped her trembling lips.
She realized that she had stood by and watched her brother assault me over money meant to save her own child.
She asked if she could go upstairs and see the daughter she had thrown away.
I looked at her with a cold, impenetrable wall of absolute rejection.
I told her that Lily did not know she was adopted, and she certainly did not know her mother was a coward.
I strictly forbade Sarah from ever going near Lily’s hospital room.
I warned her that if she tried to force her way into Lily's life now, I would have her arrested for the abandonment sixteen years ago.
Sarah wept loudly, burying her face in her hands in the middle of the crowded cafeteria.
She had lost her husband, her home, her wealth, and now her only child.

I stood up, leaving her to drown in the absolute misery of her own terrible choices.
I walked back up to the recovery ward, never looking back at the woman who used to be my daughter.
