I took a cheap taxi directly to the downtown office of my late husband’s attorney, Mr. Sterling.
Mr. Sterling saw my sling and the deep purple bruises forming on my neck.
His eyes widened in shock, but he quickly ushered me into his private boardroom.
I slammed the real estate contract down onto his polished mahogany desk.
I told him that my children were trying to seize the profits from the cabin sale.
Mr. Sterling frowned, adjusting his glasses as he looked over the legal paperwork.

If my children tried to freeze my personal bank accounts, they would find absolutely nothing.
Mr. Sterling typed furiously on his computer, drafting the ironclad legal documents.
He warned me that this maneuver would permanently alienate my children.

I looked him dead in the eye and laughed a bitter, hollow laugh.
I told him that I lost my children the moment they decided a pile of cash was worth breaking my bones.
