Chapter 2 - The Secret Ward

The hospital room was quiet except for the steady beeping of my heart monitor.
My arm was secured in a heavy sling, wrapping tightly across my bruised chest.
A young nurse walked in and handed me my personal cell phone.
I waited until she closed the door before dialing a highly memorized, secret number.
A woman named Dr. Evans answered on the second ring with a hushed tone.
I asked her how the patient was doing tonight.
Dr. Evans sighed softly, explaining that her condition was rapidly deteriorating.
I closed my eyes and fought back a fresh wave of desperate tears.
Sixteen years ago, my perfect daughter Sarah had secretly given birth in a filthy motel room.
She had abandoned the premature baby in a dumpster because she did not want to ruin her college plans.
Robert and I had found the baby, secretly claimed her through the state, and placed her in a specialized private care facility.
We named her Lily.
Lily was born with a severe, rare heart defect that required constant, expensive medical intervention.
Sarah and David never even knew that Lily had survived that terrible night.
The money from the cabin sale was the exact amount needed for Lily’s final, life-saving heart transplant.
I was not going to let my greedy son steal my granddaughter's only chance at life.

I promised Dr. Evans that the funds would be secured within the week.
I hung up the phone with a renewed, fierce determination burning in my soul.
