Chapter 14 - The Surgery

The call came at two in the morning on a rainy Sunday.
Dr. Evans told me that a perfectly matched donor heart had become available.
I rushed to the hospital, praying silently the entire agonizing cab ride.
Lily was already being prepped for the massive, risky surgery when I arrived.
I held her hand until the anesthesia gently pulled her into a deep sleep.
The surgery lasted for nine excruciating hours of absolute suspense.
I paced the waiting room, drinking terrible burnt coffee and staring at the ticking clock on the wall.
I thought about Robert, wishing he could be here to see the miracle we had worked so hard for.
Finally, the heavy double doors swung open and the lead surgeon walked out.
He pulled off his surgical mask and gave me a massive, exhausted smile.
He told me that the new heart was beating perfectly on its own and Lily was going to make a full recovery.

I fell to my knees in the middle of the waiting room and wept with absolute, overwhelming gratitude.
The nightmare was finally over, and a beautiful new chapter was just beginning.
