Chapter 11 - The Arrest

Two police officers burst through my front door with their weapons drawn.

They found David sobbing pathetically on the kitchen floor, surrounded by scattered papers.

They roughly pulled his arms behind his back and secured the heavy steel handcuffs.

The officer who had ridden in the ambulance with me a week earlier gave me a knowing look.

He read David his Miranda rights as they dragged him out into the cold night air.

David looked back at me, begging me to tell them it was just a family misunderstanding.

He actually thought I would cover for him after he broke into my home to rob me.

I stood perfectly still and told the officers that I wanted to press full burglary charges.

David’s face twisted in horror as the reality of his prison sentence finally crushed him.

He was hauled away in the back of the cruiser, completely ruining whatever future he had left.

I spent the rest of the night taping cardboard over the broken window.

My house was cold, but my conscience was incredibly clear.

I had finally taken out the trash.
