Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

The air in the grand foyer grew thick, suffocating me as I stared at the scene unfolding before my eyes.

Serena’s cruel laughter echoed off the marble walls, sharp and grating against my ears.

My father, a man who had broken his back to give me a future, was shaking on his knees.

The soapy water soaked into his worn jeans, mixing with the tears falling freely from his weathered face.

“Julian, darling, tell security to escort this vagrant out before he ruins the imported tile,” Serena drawled, not even glancing my way.

Something inside me, a fragile dam built of ambition and denial, violently snapped.

I didn’t look at her, didn’t acknowledge her presence as I dropped my leather briefcase onto the floor.

It hit the ground with a heavy thud, echoing like a gunshot in the silent room.

I rushed forward, my expensive Italian shoes splashing into the dirty puddle, and fell to my knees beside my father.

“Dad,” I whispered, my voice breaking as I gently grasped his trembling, calloused hands.

He flinched, trying to pull away, deeply ashamed of his current state.

“I’m sorry, Jules,” he choked out, his eyes fixed firmly on the floor.

“I just wanted to see you, I didn’t mean to make a mess.”

Hot tears pricked the corners of my own eyes as the crushing weight of my neglect shattered my chest.

I stood up, pulling him up with me, wrapping my arm around his frail shoulders to steady his shaking frame.

Only then did I turn my gaze to the woman I was supposed to marry in less than a month.

Serena crossed her arms, her flawless face contorted into a mask of pure disgust.

“Are you actually touching him?” she sneered.

“He smells like a garbage dump, Julian, and you are ruining your suit.”

My voice was dangerously low, vibrating with a rage I had never felt before in my life.

“Get out.”

Serena blinked, her arrogant smirk faltering for a fraction of a second.

“Excuse me?” she asked, as if she had completely misunderstood my command.

“I said, get the hell out of my house, Serena,” I roared, the boiling anger finally erupting.

“You have exactly ten minutes to pack your things and leave, or I will have security throw you out into the street.”

Her eyes widened in shock, then narrowed into venomous, calculating slits.

“You can’t possibly speak to me like that,” she hissed.

“My father’s money built your little tech empire, Julian.”

“If you throw me out, he will destroy you and everything you have built.”

I looked at her, truly seeing the ugly, hollow core beneath her designer clothes for the very first time.

“Let him try,” I said coldly.

“Now get out of my sight before I do something I regret.”

She stomped her designer heel, her face flushed with fury, before turning and marching up the grand staircase.

I held onto my father tightly, guiding him away from the mess and toward the warmth of the living room.

In that single moment, the entire trajectory of my life shifted, and a war I was determined to win had just begun.
