Chapter 10 - The Break-In

I woke up in the middle of the night to the terrifying sound of shattering glass.

Someone had thrown a brick through the back window of my kitchen.

I grabbed the heavy metal baseball bat Robert used to keep under the bed and crept down the hallway.

My heart pounded furiously against my ribs as I peered around the corner.

A dark figure was frantically tearing through the drawers of my old wooden desk.

I reached out and flicked the bright kitchen light switch on.

David froze, holding a stack of my old utility bills in his trembling hands.

He looked absolutely feral, his eyes wild and bloodshot from lack of sleep and sheer panic.

He screamed at me, demanding to know where I had hidden the check from the sale.

I gripped the baseball bat tightly, refusing to show him even an ounce of fear.

I told him that the money was completely gone and he would never touch a single dime of it.

He lunged at me, completely blinded by his toxic, consuming greed.

Before he could reach me, the blaring sound of police sirens echoed down the quiet street.

I had pressed the silent panic button on my alarm system the moment I heard the glass break.

David looked at the flashing red lights outside and fell to his knees in utter defeat.
