Chapter 2 - The Panic Room

The panic room was completely silent, insulated from the chaos outside.
I set Maya down on the plush leather sofa and knelt in front of her.
Her beautiful chestnut hair was a jagged, ruined mess on the right side.
The acrid smell of burnt keratin still clung to her clothes.
“It’s okay, sweetie,” I whispered, brushing a tear from her cheek.
“I won’t let her hurt you again.”
Maya stared at me with those massive, traumatized eyes.
She opened her mouth as if to speak, but no sound came out.
The silence broke my heart all over again.
Suddenly, the intercom on the wall buzzed to life.
“Clara, this is Chief of Security Reynolds,” a gruff voice echoed through the speaker.
“Open the door immediately.”
I pressed the talk button, my hands shaking.
“I can’t do that, Reynolds,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
“Vivienne attacked Maya.”
“Miss Croft says you assaulted her and tried to kidnap the child,” Reynolds replied coldly.
“The police are on their way.”
My stomach dropped to the floor.

Vivienne was already controlling the narrative.
I needed a miracle, or my life was completely over.
