Chapter 14 - The Secret Revealed
“Where are you going, Clara?” Harrison asked, his voice gentle.
“I thought I should go home, sir,” I replied, clutching my cheap handbag.
“My shift is technically over, and Maya needs to rest.”
“Sit down,” he said, gesturing to one of the velvet armchairs in the parlor.
I hesitantly sat, wondering if I was still in trouble for breaking protocol.
Harrison sat across from me and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
“Vivienne said something earlier,” he began.
“She said something about your sick sister.”
My heart skipped a beat.
I had tried so hard to keep my personal life out of the workplace.
“Is it true?” he asked softly.
“Yes, sir,” I admitted, looking down at my hands.
“My younger sister has leukemia.”
“She’s in a clinic in Santa Monica, and her treatments are incredibly expensive.”
“That’s why I needed this job so desperately.”
Harrison closed his eyes, a look of profound guilt washing over his face.
