Chapter 18 - Shifting Dynamics

As the months passed, the dynamic between Harrison and me began to subtly shift.

We were no longer just an employer and an employee.

We were a team, raising Maya together and managing the chaos of his life.

We stayed up late in the library after Maya went to sleep, drinking wine and talking.

He told me about his late wife, and the crushing loneliness he felt after she passed.

I told him about my childhood, and the fierce love I had for my sick sister.

We found solace in each other’s shared pain.

One evening, after a particularly grueling physical therapy session for my sister, I came back to the estate feeling exhausted.

Harrison was waiting for me in the kitchen.

He had cooked dinner.

The billionaire CEO of Vance Global was wearing an apron and flipping a steak.

“You didn’t have to do this,” I laughed, feeling a blush creep up my neck.

“You take care of everyone else, Clara,” he said, plating the food.

“It’s about time someone took care of you.”

He poured me a glass of wine and sat across from me.

The way he looked at me made my heart flutter in a way it hadn't in years.
