Chapter 12 - A New Promise
After a few minutes, Harrison gently pulled away and kissed Maya’s forehead.
He turned his red, tear-streaked eyes toward me.
“Clara,” he said softly.
“I owe you my daughter’s life.”
“I was just doing my job, sir,” I replied, wiping my own eyes.
“No,” he shook his head firmly.
“You did what a mother would do.”
“You risked your own freedom and your own safety to protect a child that wasn’t yours.”
“Vivienne was going to have you arrested, and you didn’t back down.”
He stood up and ran a hand through his perfectly styled hair, ruining it.
“I was so blinded by grief and work that I let a monster into my home,” he confessed.
“I wanted someone to play the role of a mother so badly that I ignored the red flags.”
“I will never forgive myself for that.”
“You couldn’t have known,” I told him gently.
“Vivienne is a master manipulator.”
“But you know now, and that’s what matters.”
Harrison nodded slowly, a newfound determination settling over his features.
