Chapter 7 - The Silver LocketJulian woke up just as the sun began to peek through the pine trees.

I was sitting in a chair opposite him, holding a mug of black coffee.

He winced as he tried to sit up, his hand automatically flying to his bandaged side.

“You did this?” he asked, his voice raspy from sleep.

“I had some basic nursing training before my father ruined my life,” I replied quietly.

He swung his legs off the couch, ignoring the pain.

“Thank you,” he said, the words sounding foreign on his tongue.

I set my mug down and crossed my arms.

“No more lies, Julian. Why are the Rossi men after me?”

He stared at me for a long moment, evaluating my strength.

“Your father didn't just steal money, Maya. He stole a ledger.”

“A ledger?”

“A little black book containing the names of every corrupt politician and judge on the East Coast.”

My stomach dropped to the floor.

“And they think I have it?” I whispered.

“They know you have it,” he corrected. “Your father mailed it to you two days before they killed him.”

I shook my head frantically.

“No, he didn't! He only sent me a cheap silver locket.”

Julian’s eyes locked onto the small silver pendant resting against my collarbone.
