Chapter 15 - The ResignationThe interior of the helicopter was loud, but it felt like a sanctuary.

I collapsed against the leather seat, shaking violently as the adrenaline finally left my system.
Julian sat next to me, breathing heavily, his eyes closed.
I looked down and noticed a fresh pool of blood soaking through his tactical pants.
“Julian, you are shot again!” I cried out over the engine noise.
He opened his eyes, looking down at his leg with mild annoyance.
“It seems I am,” he muttered, his head falling back against the headrest.
“Silas, we need a doctor immediately!” I screamed toward the cockpit.
“Medics are waiting at the secondary estate, Miss Maya,” Silas yelled back.
I ripped a piece of fabric from my ruined uniform and tied a makeshift tourniquet around Julian’s thigh.
He watched me with a faint, exhausted smile.
“You are ruining your uniform,” he pointed out.
“I quit,” I told him, tying the knot as tightly as I could.
He reached out, his bloody hand gently cupping my cheek.
“I accept your resignation,” he whispered softly.

His eyes rolled back, and he lost consciousness completely.
I held his hand the entire flight, praying to a God I hadn't spoken to in years.
