Chapter 15 - The ResignationThe interior of the helicopter was loud, but it felt like a sanctuary.

I collapsed against the leather seat, shaking violently as the adrenaline finally left my system.

Julian sat next to me, breathing heavily, his eyes closed.

I looked down and noticed a fresh pool of blood soaking through his tactical pants.

“Julian, you are shot again!” I cried out over the engine noise.

He opened his eyes, looking down at his leg with mild annoyance.

“It seems I am,” he muttered, his head falling back against the headrest.

“Silas, we need a doctor immediately!” I screamed toward the cockpit.

“Medics are waiting at the secondary estate, Miss Maya,” Silas yelled back.

I ripped a piece of fabric from my ruined uniform and tied a makeshift tourniquet around Julian’s thigh.

He watched me with a faint, exhausted smile.

“You are ruining your uniform,” he pointed out.

“I quit,” I told him, tying the knot as tightly as I could.

He reached out, his bloody hand gently cupping my cheek.

“I accept your resignation,” he whispered softly.

His eyes rolled back, and he lost consciousness completely.

I held his hand the entire flight, praying to a God I hadn't spoken to in years.
