Chapter 2 - The Rossi Secret“Maya Evans,”

Julian read aloud, his dark eyes snapping up to meet mine.
“No criminal record, no surviving family, and a bank account that barely covers your monthly bus pass.”
I swallowed hard, crossing my arms over my chest to stop myself from shaking.
“Is there a problem with my file, sir?”
He tossed the manila folder onto a glass table with a sharp smack.
“The problem is that it is entirely fabricated,” he said smoothly.
My blood ran ice cold.
“I don't know what you mean,” I lied, stepping back toward the doors.
Julian closed the distance between us in three long, predatory strides.
He didn't touch me, but his proximity was a physical weight.
“Your real name is Maya Rossi,” he whispered, leaning down so his lips were inches from my ear.
“Your father stole four million dollars from the Chicago syndicate before he died.”
I closed my eyes, the terrible secret I had buried for two years finally unearthed.
“Are you going to kill me?” I asked, the fight draining out of my body.
He let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated in his chest.
“If I wanted you dead, you would not have woken up this morning.”
He reached out, his hot fingers gently tucking a stray curl behind my ear.
“The syndicate has found out where you are hiding.”
May you like
I gasped, my eyes flying open in sheer panic.
“Pack your things,” Julian ordered coldly.
