Chapter 5 - The Safe HouseWe drove in agonizing silence for two hours.

I huddled in the backseat, my knees pulled tightly to my chest.
My pristine uniform was ruined, covered in dirt and soot.
Julian’s eyes constantly flicked to the rearview mirror, scanning the empty highway.
“Where are we going?” I finally found the courage to ask.
“A safe house in the Adirondacks,” he replied, his voice tight.
I noticed he was gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were white.
Then I saw the dark stain spreading across the side of his charcoal vest.
“You are bleeding,” I gasped, leaning forward.
“It is a scratch,” he grunted, refusing to look down at it.
“Julian, that is a lot of blood.”
It was the first time I had ever used his first name.
He met my eyes in the mirror, and the intensity in his gaze made my breath hitch.
“We are almost there,” he said softly.
The G-Wagon turned off the main road, plunging into a dense, dark forest.
The trees swallowed the moonlight completely.
We pulled up to a massive, modern cabin made of stone and glass.

Julian parked the car and killed the engine.
Before I could open my door, he slumped forward over the steering wheel, completely unconscious.
