Chapter 6 - A Dark Connection

I ran back to the taxi, pulling the handwritten letter out of my bodice to read it again.

There had to be a clue, a location, or a name that could help me find the Syndicate.

I scanned the bottom of the page, my eyes catching a small, barely legible footnote.

“If they ever find me, they will take me to the old shipping yard on Pier 44.”

“It is owned by a shell corporation called Sterling Holdings.”

My heart completely stopped beating.

Sterling Holdings was the exact name of the parent company owned by Mark’s family.

The breath was knocked completely out of my lungs.

Mark’s family was not just heavily involved in real estate.

They were the ruthless underground syndicate that had destroyed my parents' lives.

Mark had targeted me on purpose, grooming me into a marriage to legally silence me forever.

He knew exactly who my father was, and he knew about the massive debt.

I had almost married the devil himself.

“Driver, take me to Pier 44,” I commanded, my voice trembling with a mixture of terror and pure rage.

I pulled my cell phone out and dialed 911, but the call immediately failed.

My phone had no service.

I realized with horror that Mark had installed a tracking and blocking software on my device months ago.

I was completely on my own.
