Chapter 4 - The Hunt Begins

Mark caught up to me in the alley, grabbing my arm with a grip that was entirely too tight.
“What is wrong with you?” he demanded, his face red with embarrassment and anger.
“My father,” I choked out, desperately trying to pull my arm away from him.
“That vagrant was my father, Mark, and he is in terrible danger!”
Mark scoffed, rolling his eyes as if I were a hysterical child throwing a tantrum.
“He is a drunk who abandoned you, Sophie, stop ruining our wedding day over a bum.”
I looked at the man I was supposed to marry, seeing the cold, cruel entitlement in his eyes for the first time.
He did not care about my pain, my family, or the truth.
He only cared about the expensive spectacle waiting inside the church.
“The wedding is off,” I declared, yanking my arm completely out of his grasp.
Mark froze, the arrogant smirk immediately dropping from his face.
“You cannot be serious,” he warned, his tone dropping into a dangerous, threatening octave.
“I am dead serious,” I said, turning my back on him.
I ran out onto the main street and flagged down a passing yellow taxi.
I climbed into the backseat, my massive wedding dress taking up the entire space.

“Where to, miss?” the driver asked, looking at me in shock through the rearview mirror.
“Just drive, please,” I ordered, scanning the sidewalks for a ragged brown coat.
