Chapter 11 - The Standoff

Richard Sterling wore a custom Italian suit, looking entirely out of place in the dirty warehouse.
He took one look at his son, who was bleeding on the floor, and clicked his tongue in disappointment.
“You always were weak, Mark,” Richard scolded, completely ignoring my presence.
He turned his cold, dead eyes toward me and my father.
“And you, Miller, have been a very expensive thorn in my side for two decades.”
“It is time to finally close out your account permanently.”
The armed guards raised their weapons, taking aim directly at my father’s chest.
I stepped firmly in front of him, spreading my arms to shield him entirely.
“If you shoot him, you will have to kill me too!” I screamed, staring directly into Richard’s eyes.
Richard laughed, a dark, booming sound that chilled me to the bone.
“That was always the plan, my dear,” Richard replied smoothly.
“With both of you dead, Mark simply inherits the land as your grieving widower.”
“The paperwork was finalized this morning before the ceremony began.”
He had thought of absolutely everything.
But there was one tiny detail the brilliant billionaire had completely overlooked.

I pulled out my cell phone, holding the glowing screen up for Richard to see.
