Chapter 10 - The Reunion

I dropped the wrench and sprinted across the room to my father.

My hands shook violently as I worked to untie the thick, rough ropes binding his wrists.

“You shouldn't have come here, Sophie,” he cried, tears streaming down his bruised face.

“I am so sorry I left you.”

“I am so sorry I didn't tell you the truth.”

I pulled the last knot free and threw my arms around his frail, trembling shoulders.

“I read the letter, Dad,” I whispered, burying my face in his dirty coat.

“I know you sacrificed everything to keep us safe.”

“You are not a coward, you are my hero.”

He sobbed openly, hugging me back with a desperate, fierce strength.

For the first time in twenty years, I finally felt completely safe.

But our touching reunion was violently cut short.

The massive bay doors of the warehouse suddenly rolled open with a loud mechanical screech.

Three black SUVs drove straight into the building, their blinding headlights illuminating us entirely.

Dozens of armed men poured out of the vehicles, raising their weapons.

And stepping out of the lead car was Mark’s father, Richard Sterling.

The true boss of the Syndicate had finally arrived to finish the job.
