Chapter 1 - The Wrinkled Envelope

The guards dragged my father out the heavy wooden doors, leaving a suffocating silence in their wake.
I stood frozen on the marble floor, my eyes locked onto the dirty, weathered envelope resting near my white satin heels.
My fiancé, Mark, rushed to my side and wrapped a protective arm around my trembling shoulders.
“Are you alright, Sophie?” he asked, his voice dripping with practiced concern.
I did not answer him.
I slowly bent down, the heavy fabric of my wedding dress rustling in the quiet cathedral.
My fingers brushed the rough paper, and a sudden jolt of electricity shot up my arm.
The envelope was sealed with thick, black tape, stained with what looked like years of dirt and dried blood.
“Throw that away, it’s probably covered in disease,” Mark insisted, reaching out to snatch it from my hands.
I pulled it back, pressing it against my chest with a fierce, protective instinct I did not understand.
“No,” I whispered, my voice echoing in the vast, empty hall.
“I need a moment alone before we walk down the aisle.”
My bridesmaids exchanged worried glances, but no one dared to argue with the bride.
I retreated into the private bridal suite and locked the heavy oak door behind me.
My hands shook violently as I tore the black tape away.
Inside was a stack of folded medical documents and a single, handwritten letter.
The handwriting was messy and frantic, but I recognized it instantly.

I unfolded the yellowed paper, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.
And in just three short sentences, my entire reality completely shattered.
