Chapter 9 - The Confession Tape

Absolute, unadulterated chaos instantly erupted inside the elegant living room as the shocking news of Beatrice's disappearance fully registered.
Detective Harris aggressively drew his heavy weapon, loudly ordering his officers to immediately secure the entire perimeter of the massive property.
Julian aggressively jumped up from the leather sofa, his dark eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of absolute panic and dangerous confusion.
“She couldn't have possibly escaped on her own, Clara, what the hell did you actually do?” he screamed, violently pointing a finger at me.
“I have been standing right here in front of you this entire time, Julian!” I yelled back, equally terrified and completely bewildered.
Eleanor aggressively grabbed her expensive designer purse, desperately attempting to sneak toward the kitchen to access the rear garage door.
“Stop right there, Eleanor, nobody is leaving this house until we find the victim,” a federal agent barked, physically blocking her path.
I frantically ran down the dark hallway, closely following the lead paramedic directly into the heavily suffocated guest bedroom.
The room was completely empty, the sagging mattress entirely stripped of its dirty blankets, and the heavy glass window was violently shattered.
Cold night air aggressively whipped through the broken frame, heavily scattering the remaining medical papers violently across the hardwood floor.
I noticed a small, bright red blinking light carefully tucked beneath the edge of the antique cedar trunk near the bed.
I quickly knelt down and pulled out my hidden, encrypted recording device that I had completely forgotten to retrieve earlier.
“Detective Harris, you need to listen to this right now!” I shouted loudly, sprinting back into the living room with the small black recorder.
I aggressively slammed the device onto the glass coffee table and forcefully hit the play button at maximum volume for everyone to hear.
Instead of the conversation I had recorded earlier, a completely new, incredibly terrifying voice loudly echoed through the quiet room.
It was the smooth, chilling voice of the corrupt corporate lawyer they had hired, speaking directly to Beatrice just minutes before the police arrived.
“Your greedy grandson is currently distracted at the front door, Beatrice, so we are leaving through the window right now,” the lawyer’s recorded voice sneered.
“If you want to live to see tomorrow, you will quietly sign these final transfer documents in my car before I throw you in the river.”
Julian gasped loudly, physically stumbling backward as he realized his incredibly expensive lawyer had completely double-crossed their entire murderous operation.
The lawyer had secretly decided to steal the five million dollars entirely for himself, violently kidnapping Beatrice during the chaotic police distraction.
Eleanor let out a blood-curdling, hysterical scream of pure, unadulterated rage, realizing she had been completely outsmarted by her own criminal accomplice.

“Put an immediate APB out for a black Mercedes sedan, the suspect is armed and incredibly dangerous!” Harris roared into his police radio.
My blood ran completely cold as I stared at the flashing red light, terrifyingly aware that the woman I promised to save was now in imminent, lethal danger.
