Chapter 3 - The Vitamin Swap

The very next morning, I officially began my dangerous new routine of playing the perfect, submissive caretaker.

Julian left for his corporate office early, leaving me entirely alone in the house with his terrifying mother.

Eleanor sat at the marble kitchen island, elegantly sipping her black coffee while watching my every single move.

“Make sure you crush her pills completely before mixing them into her warm oatmeal, Clara,” she instructed coldly.

“If she spots the capsules, she will violently refuse to eat, and I simply do not have the patience for her tantrums.”

I nodded obediently, pulling a heavy marble mortar and pestle from the top wooden kitchen cabinet.

But instead of grabbing the heavy, dangerous tranquilizers they had prescribed, I took out a bottle of simple vitamins.

I had secretly swapped the pills late last night, replacing the sedatives with harmless supplements of the exact same color.

I forcefully crushed the vitamins into a fine white powder and stirred them deeply into the warm bowl of food.

Eleanor smiled in dark satisfaction, completely unaware that I was actively dismantling her murderous, calculated plan.

“You are surprisingly useful, Clara, much more so than the expensive registered nurses we had to unexpectedly fire,” she sneered.

“I am just genuinely happy to help the family in any way I possibly can,” I replied, keeping my eyes fixed on the bowl.

I carefully carried the breakfast tray down the hallway, unlocking the heavy guest bedroom door with the cold brass key.

The grandmother was already awake, her sharp eyes carefully tracking my movements as I locked the door securely behind me.

“They think they are so incredibly clever and completely untouchable,” she rasped, watching me set the heavy tray on her lap.

“I permanently swapped the sedatives for vitamins last night, so your mind should start clearing up very soon,” I whispered.

She took a slow, trembling bite of the warm oatmeal, visibly savoring the incredible taste of unpoisoned, safe food.

“We need to work very quickly, Clara, before Eleanor realizes that her heavy sedatives are no longer working on me.”

“I safely copied every single file from the hidden flash drive onto a highly secure cloud server last night,” I informed her quietly.

“I saw the classified toxicology report about your husband, and I know exactly what Eleanor did to him years ago.”

The old woman’s eyes instantly filled with a sudden, overwhelming grief, but her jaw remained firmly set in determination.

“She brutally murdered the only man I ever truly loved, and Julian eagerly helped her hide the bloody evidence.”

“I promise you, Beatrice, they are both going to rot in a federal prison for the rest of their miserable lives,” I swore to her.

“Call the federal prosecutor today, Clara, because Eleanor is planning to finalize the massive estate transfer by Friday.”

“Once she officially has the money, she will completely stop feeding me, and I will be dead within a week.”

My blood ran absolutely cold, realizing the terrifying, ticking clock we were suddenly fighting against.
