Chapter 8 - The Gala Preparation

The sheer terror in Julian’s eyes was absolutely breathtaking as he finally realized his entire corrupt empire was violently crumbling into dust.
He stared at the heavy leather bag in the detective's hands, knowing with absolute certainty that it contained his guaranteed ticket to federal prison.
“Clara, you are completely confused, you don't know what you are doing,” Julian stammered desperately, attempting to physically reach for me.
“I know exactly what I am doing, Julian, I am finally stopping two absolute monsters from murdering an innocent woman,” I replied coldly.
Detective Harris quickly handed my bag to a uniformed officer waiting on the porch, strictly ordering him to secure it in the armored vehicle.
“We have enough probable cause to instantly secure this entire property as an active crime scene,” Harris announced to my horrified husband.
“I want all of you to wait in the living room while my medical team officially examines Beatrice’s condition in the back room.”
Eleanor aggressively crossed her arms, her face completely pale but her eyes still burning with a toxic, arrogant defiance.
“You will absolutely regret this, Clara, I have incredibly powerful friends who will destroy your miserable life,” she hissed venomously.
“Your powerful friends cannot save you from a federal murder charge, Eleanor,” I shot back, completely unfazed by her pathetic, empty threats.
Two paramedics rushed through the open front door, carrying heavy medical equipment directly down the hallway toward the guest bedroom.
Julian violently collapsed onto the expensive leather sofa in the living room, burying his face deep into his trembling hands in absolute defeat.
For years, he had completely convinced himself that he was a brilliant mastermind, untouchable by the law and superior to everyone around him.
But in reality, he was just a pathetic, greedy coward who violently preyed on his own vulnerable family members for unearned cash.
I stood silently in the corner of the room, feeling an incredible, overwhelming sense of absolute power surging through my veins.
The heavy, suffocating weight of my miserable marriage was finally lifting off my shoulders, entirely replaced by a beautiful, crystal-clear freedom.
Suddenly, the lead paramedic rushed out of the back hallway, his face incredibly pale and his voice shaking with absolute urgency.
“Detective Harris, we have a massive problem in the back room!” the paramedic shouted loudly, instantly causing the entire room to freeze.
“The elderly patient is not in the bed, and the heavy window has been completely smashed open from the inside!”
Eleanor let out a sharp, genuine gasp of absolute shock, while Julian’s head violently snapped up from his trembling hands.
I stared at the paramedic in complete, paralyzed disbelief, my heart violently hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Beatrice was incredibly frail; there was absolutely no physical way she could have smashed a locked window and climbed out by herself.
Unless someone else had secretly been hiding in that room with her, waiting for the perfect moment to execute a totally different plan.
