Chapter 6 - The Unexpected Visit

Eleanor completely ignored my weak excuse, forcefully shoving me aside to get a much closer look at Beatrice’s condition.

The old woman instantly let her head fall heavily against the pillows, allowing her mouth to hang open in a perfect imitation of a drug-induced stupor.

Eleanor violently grabbed Beatrice’s chin, turning her head aggressively from side to side with absolutely no regard for her fragility.

“Her skin has entirely too much color, and her breathing is far too deep and regular for someone on these heavy sedatives,” Eleanor muttered suspiciously.

She aggressively turned toward me, her cold, calculating eyes narrowing into sharp, dangerous slits that made my blood run absolutely cold.

“Bring me the orange prescription bottle from the kitchen cabinet right this second, Clara,” she commanded in a low, terrifyingly dangerous voice.

Panic violently seized my chest, completely paralyzing my lungs as I realized she was about to discover my dangerous vitamin swap.

If she carefully examined the capsules, she would instantly realize the powdery texture inside the plastic shells was completely wrong.

“Eleanor, I assure you I gave her exactly what you instructed,” I stammered slightly, desperately trying to maintain my calm facade.

“I do not care what you assure me, go get the damn bottle before I have Julian throw you out into the street!” she screamed.

I slowly backed out of the suffocating bedroom, my mind frantically racing to find a way out of this terrifying, deadly situation.

As I walked down the dark hallway, the heavy front doorbell suddenly rang, loudly echoing through the entire tense house.

Julian aggressively stomped out of his home office, aggressively ripping the front door open with a deeply furious expression.

Standing on the porch was a tall, incredibly imposing man wearing a sharp suit and flashing a shiny gold badge.

“Mr. Julian, I am Detective Harris from the financial crimes division, and we need to ask you a few questions about a recent offshore transfer,” the man announced.

Julian’s face instantly drained of all color, his arrogant swagger completely vanishing as sheer terror violently gripped his features.

“I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, Detective, my finances are perfectly legal and handled by professionals,” Julian lied weakly.

Eleanor rushed out of the guest bedroom, completely abandoning her dangerous interrogation of me to handle the sudden police presence.

“Do you have a federal warrant to be on our property, Detective?” she demanded fiercely, stepping directly in front of her panicked son.

“We do not need a warrant to simply ask some routine questions, ma'am, but we can certainly get one if you prefer to be difficult,” Harris replied coldly.

I stood perfectly still in the shadows, silently locking eyes with Detective Harris for a brief, incredibly intense fraction of a second.

He gave me an almost imperceptible nod, confirming that he was actually part of the federal prosecutor's brilliant, coordinated sting operation.

The police were intentionally distracting Julian and Eleanor, giving me the perfect, desperate window to finally finalize the trap.

I quietly slipped back into the guest bedroom, securely locking the heavy door while they argued frantically with the detective on the porch.
