Chapter 1 - The Charade Begins

Julian’s shoulders relaxed completely as he heard my words of absolute, unquestioning submission.
He walked over and kissed my forehead, a gesture that used to make me feel incredibly safe.
Now, his familiar touch felt like a venomous snake brushing violently against my skin.
“I knew you would understand, Clara, because you always see the logical side of things,” he murmured softly.
“She is very old, her mind is completely gone, and she is constantly in pain.”
“We are just trying to keep her comfortable until nature finally takes its inevitable, tragic course.”
Eleanor took a delicate sip of her expensive chardonnay, her sharp eyes narrowing slightly as she observed my reaction.
“It takes a remarkably strong woman to handle the ugly side of family business,” she added smoothly.
“The expensive nurses we hired kept asking far too many questions about her daily medication schedule.”
“We desperately need someone in the house who knows how to follow strict instructions without causing unnecessary drama.”
I nodded slowly, keeping my facial expression entirely blank and obedient to maintain my careful disguise.
“Of course, Eleanor, I will take over her daily care immediately without any complaints,” I promised them.
“Just leave the medication schedule on the kitchen counter, and I will make sure she takes exactly what she needs.”
Julian beamed at me, genuinely believing he had successfully manipulated his quiet, boring, and predictable wife.
He patted my shoulder, grabbed his leather briefcase, and announced he was heading back to the corporate office.
Eleanor lingered for a few tense moments, warning me to wear gloves because the old woman sometimes scratched.
Once I heard the heavy wooden front door finally click shut, I let out a long, shaky breath.
My entire body was trembling with a terrifying mixture of profound shock and absolute, blinding rage.
I immediately ran to the kitchen and grabbed a fresh bottle of spring water and a clean silver spoon.
I hurried back into the suffocating guest bedroom and securely locked the heavy oak door behind me.
Julian’s grandmother opened her eyes the very second I knelt beside her sagging, uncomfortable mattress.
“They are gone for now,” I whispered, gently lifting her fragile head to give her a sip of clean water.
She drank greedily, coughing slightly as the cool, refreshing liquid coated her terribly parched throat.
“You play the role of a foolish, obedient wife very well, Clara,” she rasped, her eyes shining with sudden clarity.
“I had an excellent, truly terrifying teacher today,” I replied, wiping her chin with a soft cotton towel.
“Now, you need to tell me exactly what is hidden on that small flash drive in the trunk.”
She managed a weak, terrifying smile that sent a shiver straight down my spine.

“It holds the absolute, undeniable ruin of my ungrateful grandson and his murderous mother,” she whispered.
I knew right then that I was going to gladly help her burn their perfect lives to the ground.
