Chapter 11 - The Edge of the Pier

The freezing wind howled violently across the desolate industrial pier, chilling me completely to the absolute bone.

Thick, suffocating fog rolled aggressively off the dark water, obscuring our vision and making every single shadow look like a terrifying threat.

Detective Harris kept his heavy tactical flashlight raised high, the bright beam slicing sharply through the dense, salty mist.

I stayed closely behind his broad shoulders, my heart violently hammering against my ribs with a terrifying, rhythmic intensity.

We slowly approached the abandoned black Mercedes sedan, our careful footsteps echoing loudly against the damp, cracked concrete of the massive dock.

The luxurious leather interior of the vehicle was completely empty, but a violent struggle had clearly taken place on the expensive seats.

A single, heavily worn slipper belonging to Beatrice was tragically abandoned on the wet ground near the rear tire.

“He dragged her toward the old shipping containers on the far left side of the pier,” Harris whispered intensely, gesturing with his weapon.

We cautiously moved through the terrifying maze of rusted metal boxes, the terrifying sound of crashing waves masking our desperate approach.

Suddenly, a sharp, cruel voice angrily echoed through the thick fog, sending a violent chill straight down my trembling spine.

“Sign the damn papers right now, you stubborn old bat, or I will push you over the edge!” the corrupt lawyer screamed.

We rapidly rounded the corner of a massive blue container and finally saw them standing precariously near the absolute edge of the pier.

The lawyer was aggressively holding a terrifyingly frail Beatrice by the collar of her thin nightgown, dangling her dangerously close to the freezing water.

He had a thick manila folder violently shoved against her chest and a heavy silver revolver pressed firmly against her trembling temple.

“Drop your weapon and step away from the woman right this second!” Detective Harris roared loudly, aiming his gun directly at the lawyer’s chest.

The lawyer violently flinched in absolute surprise, spinning around to face us with wide, panicked eyes filled with desperate greed.

“Stay back, or I swear I will shoot her and drop her into the damn ocean!” he threatened hysterically, his hand violently shaking.

Beatrice looked directly at me through the thick fog, her faded eyes shining with a breathtaking, unyielding defiance that completely amazed me.

“Do not let him take the money, Clara, shoot this miserable coward,” she rasped bravely, completely unafraid of the terrifying weapon against her head.

I stood my ground, staring directly into the eyes of the pathetic man who thought he could easily outsmart everyone for a fortune.
