Chapter 2 - The Flash Drive's Secret

Later that night, while Julian was snoring loudly beside me, I quietly slipped out of our king-sized bed.

I grabbed my encrypted work laptop and tiptoed silently down the dark hallway to my private home office.

My hands were shaking violently as I plugged the small, black flash drive into the computer's USB port.

The main folder was heavily password protected, but the grandmother had whispered the secret code to me earlier.

I carefully typed in the name of Julian’s childhood dog, a sick irony that made my stomach aggressively churn.

The screen flashed bright green, instantly revealing dozens of highly organized, incredibly detailed financial spreadsheets.

Julian and Eleanor had systematically drained nearly five million dollars from her private offshore banking accounts.

They had forged her signature on multiple property deeds, illegally transferring prime commercial real estate directly into dummy corporations.

But the massive financial theft was not even the most horrifying discovery hidden deep on that encrypted drive.

I cautiously clicked on a subfolder labeled with the exact year Julian’s grandfather had unexpectedly passed away.

Inside, I found scanned copies of private medical records and an independent, highly classified toxicology report.

Eleanor had slowly poisoned her own husband using the exact same heavy tranquilizers she was now giving the grandmother.

The old woman had secretly hired a private investigator to uncover the truth, meticulously compiling all this evidence over the years.

She had been patiently waiting for the perfect moment to strike, but Eleanor had quickly realized she knew too much.

That was precisely why they locked her in that suffocating back room and intentionally drugged her into silence.

A cold, paralyzing sweat broke out across the back of my neck as I frantically read the toxicologist's final notes.

I was legally married to a ruthless man who actively helped his mother cover up a cold-blooded murder.

And right now, I was the absolute only person standing between them and their next helpless, elderly victim.

I quickly copied every single file onto my own secure cloud server and encrypted it with a double biometric password.

I needed to contact a ruthless, powerful lawyer, but a regular family attorney would absolutely never be enough for this.

I needed a federal prosecutor who specialized in severe elder abuse and massive corporate financial fraud.

Suddenly, the hardwood floorboards creaked loudly right outside my closed, locked office door.

I slammed the laptop shut just as the brass doorknob began to slowly and aggressively turn.

Julian stood in the doorway, rubbing his sleepy eyes and frowning suspiciously at the darkness in the room.

“What exactly are you doing up so incredibly late, Clara?” he asked, his voice laced with a sudden, dangerous edge.

“I am just catching up on some urgent work emails, darling,” I lied smoothly, offering him a sweet, tired smile.

“Come back to bed, you have a very long day of taking care of my grandmother tomorrow,” he commanded coldly.
