Chapter 12 - The Fatal Mistake

The incredibly tense standoff felt like it lasted for a painful, agonizing eternity in the freezing, suffocating cold.
The corrupt lawyer desperately tightened his violent grip on Beatrice, his expensive suit now completely soaked by the freezing ocean spray.
“You have absolutely no way out of this situation, so put the gun down before you make a fatal mistake,” Harris commanded with icy authority.
“I am a brilliant corporate attorney, I know exactly how to manipulate the legal system to walk away from this!” the man screamed desperately.
“You cannot manipulate a federal kidnapping and attempted murder charge, you pathetic fool,” I shouted back, my voice echoing loudly across the pier.
My bold words violently struck a nerve, completely shattering the arrogant, calculated facade he had maintained for so many years.
In a sudden, terrifying moment of absolute panic, the lawyer aggressively shifted his aim away from Beatrice and pointed his heavy revolver directly at me.
It was the ultimate, catastrophic mistake that finally sealed his miserable, pathetic fate.
The incredibly loud, deafening roar of Detective Harris’s tactical weapon violently shattered the quiet night.
A single, perfectly aimed bullet aggressively struck the corrupt lawyer directly in his right shoulder, violently spinning his body backward.
He let out a blood-curdling scream of pure agony as the heavy silver revolver violently slipped from his trembling fingers.
The sheer momentum of the powerful gunshot forcefully threw him completely off balance, his expensive leather shoes slipping on the wet concrete.
He violently tumbled backward over the rusted metal railing, plunging directly into the freezing, turbulent ocean water below with a massive splash.
Beatrice violently swayed forward, completely losing her fragile balance as the lawyer's aggressive grip suddenly vanished.
I violently sprinted forward with absolutely everything I had, ignoring the terrifying drop waiting just inches away.
I aggressively grabbed the fabric of her thin nightgown, forcefully pulling her frail body back onto the solid, safe concrete.
We both collapsed heavily onto the freezing, wet ground, gasping for precious air as the massive adrenaline rush finally began to fade.
Detective Harris rapidly rushed to the rusted edge of the pier, shining his bright flashlight down into the dark, violent waves.
“The harbor patrol is already on the way to fish him out of the water, he is not going anywhere,” Harris announced with grim satisfaction.

I violently wrapped my warm winter coat completely around Beatrice's trembling shoulders, holding her tightly against my rapidly heaving chest.
“You are perfectly safe now, Beatrice, it is all completely over,” I whispered fiercely, hot tears of immense relief streaming down my freezing face.
