Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

An hour later, the door creaked open, but it wasn't Marcus who walked in.
It was Sylvia, alone, clutching her expensive leather handbag.
She walked over and locked the door behind her, a sinister smile creeping across her perfectly Botoxed face.
“You always were a pathetic, weak little girl,” she sneered, dropping the caring mother-in-law act entirely.
I slowly sat up in the hospital bed, the burner phone safely hidden beneath the heavy blankets.
I had already dialed Julian’s number and left the line open so he could record every single word.
“Why are you doing this, Sylvia?” I asked, making sure to project my voice clearly.
“Because you are useless to this family, and my son deserves far better than a whiny burden,” she spat.
“You drove your heel into my pregnant stomach just because you don't like me?”
Sylvia laughed, a cold, empty sound that echoed in the sterile room.
“I did it because if you die from complications, Marcus inherits your trust fund immediately.”
“I actually did him a massive favor by getting rid of the excess baggage.”
“It is a shame two of those little parasites survived the blow, but we will handle that at the clinic.”
My blood boiled with a maternal fury so intense it terrified me.
“You are going to rot in a prison cell for the rest of your miserable life,” I promised her.
Sylvia stepped forward, raising her hand as if she was going to strike my face.
Suddenly, a loud, thunderous pounding echoed against the locked door.
“Open this door immediately, or we will breach it!” a deep, commanding male voice shouted.

Sylvia’s face went pale as she quickly backed away from my bed.
The game was finally over.
