Chapter 6 - The Shark

My hands shook uncontrollably as I dialed the only number I had memorized since college.

It belonged to Julian Vance, a ruthless, high-profile defense attorney who owed my late father a massive favor.

He was notorious for completely destroying his opponents in the courtroom without a single ounce of mercy.

The line rang twice before his deep, intimidating voice answered the call.

“Vance speaking,” he barked into the receiver.

“Julian, it is Elena,” I whispered, keeping an eye on the door in case Marcus returned.

There was a brief pause before his tone softened considerably.

“Elena? It has been years. What is wrong with your voice?”

I quickly explained everything that had happened over the last twenty-four hours.

I told him about the assault, the lost baby, the cover-up, and the psychiatric transfer documents.

I could hear Julian aggressively typing on his keyboard on the other end of the line.

“Do not sign a single piece of paper, Elena,” he commanded with absolute authority.

“They are trying to put you under a permanent conservatorship so they can control your inheritance.”

I gasped, completely forgetting about the massive trust fund my father had left me for when I turned thirty.

“Marcus never cared about the money before,” I argued weakly, though the pieces were starting to align.

“Marcus’s tech startup went completely bankrupt three months ago, Elena.”

“He is drowning in massive corporate debt, and his mother's estate is heavily mortgaged.”

The horrific realization hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

They didn't just hate me; they viewed me as a convenient payday.

“I am sending a private security team and a medical transport unit to your hospital right now,” Julian stated.

“Sit tight, kid, the war has just officially begun.”
