Chapter 5 - Playing Possum

I let out a weak, confused groan, pretending the painkillers were completely clouding my mind.
“Marcus?” I mumbled, slurring my words intentionally.
“What happened? Why am I in the hospital?”
Marcus and Sylvia exchanged a quick, triumphant glance, clearly believing my feigned memory loss.
“You had a terrible accident at the party, sweetheart,” Marcus said, stroking my hair with fake affection.
“You drank too much champagne, tripped over the rug, and crashed into the glass table.”
I forced myself to cry, letting genuine tears of grief mask my burning, unadulterated rage.
“The babies?” I sobbed, making sure to look entirely helpless.

Marcus nodded in agreement, pulling a stack of legal documents from his designer leather briefcase.
“My mother is right, Elena, you need specialized psychiatric care to overcome this trauma.”
“I have arranged for you to be transferred to a private wellness retreat in the mountains.”
“Just sign these medical proxy forms, and I will take care of absolutely everything.”
They were trying to take away my legal rights, strip me of my autonomy, and lock me away.
Under the guise of a groggy haze, I fumbled with the pen, intentionally dropping it on the floor.
“I am too tired, Marcus, my vision is completely blurry,” I whined pathetically.
“Let me sleep for a few hours, and I will sign whatever you want when I wake up.”

He sighed in annoyance but agreed, leaving the papers on the bedside table.
As soon as they left the room, I reached under my pillow and grabbed the burner phone.
