Chapter 14 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning with a unanimous verdict.
I held Julian’s hand as the foreperson stood up to read the final decision.
“On the charge of first-degree assault and attempted murder, we find the defendant, Sylvia, guilty.”
Sylvia collapsed into her chair, sobbing violently as the reality of a life sentence finally crushed her.
“On the charges of conspiracy, fraud, and accessory to murder, we find the defendant, Marcus, guilty.”
Marcus hung his head, openly weeping as the bailiffs immediately clapped heavy iron handcuffs on his wrists.
The judge sentenced Sylvia to forty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.
Marcus received twenty-five years for his active role in the horrific cover-up and financial conspiracy.
As they were dragged out of the courtroom, neither of them dared to look in my direction.
They were ghosts, entirely erased from my bright, promising future.
Just as the judge adjourned the court, a sudden, sharp pain ripped through my lower abdomen.
My water had just broken right there in the front row of the courthouse gallery.
Julian quickly caught me as I stumbled, yelling for the paramedics who were stationed outside.
“It is time,” I gasped, clutching my stomach as a mixture of pain and pure joy washed over me.

I was rushed to the hospital, not as a victim, but as a victorious survivor.
The nightmare was officially over, and my real life was finally about to begin.
