Chapter 3 - Waking Up to a Nightmare

The harsh fluorescent lights of the intensive care unit burned my eyes as I slowly fluttered them open.

A dull, throbbing ache radiated from my midsection, reminding me of the horrific trauma I had endured.

I instinctively reached down, my trembling fingers brushing against the thick gauze covering my abdomen.

A warm hand gently rested on my shoulder, making me flinch in sheer panic.

It was a young night nurse with kind brown eyes and a reassuring, gentle smile.

“You are safe, honey, the surgery was a success,” she whispered, checking my IV drip.

“The twins are holding strong, but you need strict bed rest for the foreseeable future.”

Tears immediately flooded my vision as I remembered the tiny life that had been stolen from me.

“Where is my husband?” I managed to croak out, my throat parched and scratchy.

The nurse’s expression darkened, and she leaned in close to my ear, ensuring no one else could hear.

“He is outside in the waiting room with a woman who claims to be his mother.”

“They tried to pay the chief surgeon to alter your medical records and state you had a spontaneous miscarriage.”

My blood ran absolutely cold, turning my veins to ice.

They were not just trying to cover up an assault; they were actively trying to erase the truth.

“The surgeon refused, but your husband brought in a team of high-powered corporate lawyers,” she warned me.

“They are trying to get you transferred to a private psychiatric facility, claiming you are mentally unstable.”

I realized with terrifying clarity that if I left this hospital with them, I would never be seen again.

I grabbed the nurse's arm, ignoring the sharp pain shooting through my IV line.

“Please, you have to help me,” I begged desperately.
