Chapter 2 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I stared at Marcus, my brain refusing to comprehend the sheer audacity of his lie.
“Tripped?” I wheezed, the pain radiating through my entire body with every shallow breath.
“She drove her heel directly into my stomach, Marcus, she did it on purpose!”
Marcus grabbed my hand, squeezing it so hard that my knuckles instantly turned white.
“Sweetheart, you are just in shock, your memory of the event is confused,” he said smoothly.
His eyes were totally devoid of the warmth and love I thought I had seen earlier that night.
The doctor cleared his throat, looking between the two of us with intense suspicion.
“I will need to note the cause of the injuries for the police report,” the specialist stated firmly.
Marcus stepped between me and the doctor, completely blocking my view of the medical staff.
“It was a tragic family accident during a party, there is no need to involve the police.”
“My wife fell backward onto a broken glass table after losing her balance.”
I tried to scream out in protest, but a sudden wave of dizziness hit me like a freight train.
The blood loss was catching up to me, pulling me down into a dark, terrifying abyss.
As the nurses rushed in to prep me for emergency surgery, I caught one last glimpse of Marcus.
He pulled out his cell phone, dialing a number with calm, steady fingers.
“Mom? It's handled, just get the lawyers ready,” I heard him whisper before the anesthesia dragged me under.
In that fleeting moment before unconsciousness, my entire reality completely shattered.
