Chapter 20 - The Empty Stool

The next morning, Clara and Toby walked through the gardens of their massive home.

The sun was shining brightly, casting a golden glow over the manicured lawns.

Clara stopped near the old wooden deck where the infamous birthday party had taken place.

The folding stool was still sitting there, tucked away near the edge of the patio.

Toby walked over to it and gently touched the metal frame.

“Do you want me to have the gardeners throw it away?” Clara asked softly.

Toby shook his head, a wise expression on his young face.

“No, I want to keep it.”

“Why is that, sweetheart?”

“So I always remember to never make anyone else sit on it,” Toby replied.

Clara felt a tear slip down her cheek, and she pulled her son into a tight embrace.

They had survived the cruelty of the Sterling family and emerged stronger than ever.

They had turned a moment of profound humiliation into a lifetime of incredible purpose.
