Chapter 1 - The Shattered Silence

The silence in the Sterling backyard was absolute and deafening.

Not a single child laughed, and not a single adult dared to take a breath.

Beatrice looked as though she had been struck by lightning.

Her heavy gold bracelets clinked as her hands began to tremble uncontrollably.

Clara stood frozen by the patio doors, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She looked at Arthur, the man she had simply known as her husband’s estranged grandfather.

When Clara’s husband passed away, the Sterlings had offered her nothing but cold indifference.

They had shoved Arthur into a sterile, lonely facility, waiting for him to pass so they could divide his empire.

Clara was the only one who visited him, bringing Toby along to read him books and keep his mind sharp.

She never expected a reward, and certainly not the entire Sterling estate.

“You can’t be serious, Dad,” Beatrice finally choked out, her voice shrill and desperate.

“She is a nobody, a gold-digger who manipulated you when you were vulnerable!”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed into terrifying slits.

“I was vulnerable because my own flesh and blood abandoned me for a country club membership.”

He walked slowly down the steps, his cane clicking against the wood with a sound like a judge’s gavel.

“Clara showed me kindness when there was nothing to gain.”

He stopped right in front of Beatrice.

“You showed me your true colors, and now you will pay the price.”

He turned to Clara and offered a gentle, reassuring smile.

“Pack your things, Clara, because you and Toby are moving into the main house tomorrow.”
