Chapter 18 - The Apology Letter

One afternoon, Clara received a crumpled envelope in the mail with no return address.
Inside was a handwritten letter from Julian, Preston’s younger brother.
The handwriting was messy, clearly written by a child.
Dear Toby, I am sorry I laughed when my mom made you sit by the trash.
Things are really bad at my house now, and my parents yell all the time.
I wish I had been nicer to you.
Clara felt a sharp pang of sympathy in her chest.
She showed the letter to Toby later that evening.
Toby read it slowly, his brow furrowed in thought.
“Mom, can we send him a care package?” Toby asked looking up.
“He shouldn't have to be sad just because his parents are mean.”
Clara smiled warmly, incredibly proud of the compassionate boy she had raised.
“I think that is a wonderful idea, buddy.”
They packed a box with toys, books, and some of the expensive French macarons.

It was a lesson in grace that Beatrice could never have understood.
Wealth hadn't corrupted Toby; it had simply amplified his kind heart.
