Chapter 16 - The Defeat

The silence in the conference room was suffocating.
Beatrice’s high-priced attorney slowly packed his briefcase and stood up.
“I cannot represent you in a case involving federal fraud,” the lawyer said sharply.
“You are on your own.”
Richard looked completely defeated, his arrogance shattering into pieces.
Beatrice stared at the blank television screen, trembling with a mixture of rage and terror.
They had been outsmarted from the grave by the father they had underestimated.
Clara stood up, adjusting her coat calmly.
“If you ever come near me or my son again, I will trigger that clause myself,” Clara warned them.
“Go live whatever life you can afford.”
She walked out of the conference room, leaving them sitting in the ruins of their own making.
Jonathan Vance walked beside her, chuckling softly.
“He really was a brilliant man, wasn't he?” Jonathan remarked.
“Yes, he was,” Clara agreed, stepping out into the bright city sunlight.
She finally felt the heavy burden of fear lift off her shoulders.
