Chapter 5 - Ghost in the Snow

Marcus navigated the snowy streets with reckless precision.

He needed to put as much distance between them and the apartment as possible.

The delivery van was slow, but its generic logo helped them blend into the morning traffic.

Leo sat silently, watching the city blur past through the frosty window.

"Are the police the bad guys now, Dad?" Leo asked, his voice trembling.

"Some of them are, Leo, but I'm going to fix it," Marcus promised.

He realized Arthur Sterling was the weak link in this massive conspiracy.

The landlord was a civilian, a greedy man who laundered money for dirty cops.

If Marcus could squeeze Arthur, he could unravel Briggs's entire empire.

But first, he needed a secure place to stash the boy.

He drove toward the south side, heading into a neighborhood the police heavily avoided.

He pulled up to an abandoned auto body shop covered in graffiti.

This was a safe house Marcus had established years ago, off the books entirely.

He pulled the van into the garage and quickly pulled down the heavy steel door.
