Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

Marcus wrapped his heavy winter coat around Leo’s trembling shoulders.

The boy’s breathing was shallow, his eyes wide with lingering terror.

Arthur Sterling stood frozen on the balcony, his ledger suddenly feeling very heavy in his hands.

Marcus didn’t say a single word as he stepped toward the landlord.

His fist connected with Arthur’s jaw with a sickening crunch, sending the man crashing onto the icy concrete.

“If you ever come near my son again, I won’t stop at your jaw,” Marcus growled.

He scooped Leo into his arms and carried him inside the freezing apartment.

He quickly grabbed the boy’s emergency inhaler, pressing it to Leo's blue lips.

As Leo finally took a deep, stabilizing breath, Marcus locked the deadbolt.

Someone had orchestrated this brutal trap, and they were likely still watching the building.

He needed to find the drone his son had been flying earlier that afternoon.

Leo pointed a shaky finger toward his bedroom closet.

Marcus found the small plastic quadcopter hidden beneath a pile of laundry.
