Chapter 9 - The Counter-Attack

My recovery was miraculous, fueled by pure adrenaline and the anticipation of sweet revenge.

The doctors cleared me for discharge a full week earlier than anyone had initially expected.

Instead of going back to the house or a care facility, Arthur arranged for a private car to pick me up.

I checked into a luxurious, five-star hotel downtown, paying for it out of an account Marcus knew absolutely nothing about.

For years, they assumed I survived solely on my late husband's modest pension.

They never knew about the aggressive tech stocks I had purchased in the early nineties, which had split and multiplied into a massive fortune.

I sat in my plush hotel robe, sipping expensive chamomile tea while overlooking the city skyline.

Arthur sat across from me, reviewing the final details of our spectacular counter-attack.

"The closing for the house is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at Mr. Vance's office," Arthur confirmed, checking his watch.

"Marcus and Vanessa think they are walking away with a check for four hundred thousand dollars."

I smiled, feeling the lingering pain in my ribs fade away entirely.

"Make sure the police are positioned in the conference room next door," I instructed calmly.

"I want them to feel the absolute height of victory before we crush them."

Arthur nodded, a dangerous, predatory smile mirroring my own.

Tomorrow, my ungrateful son would finally learn exactly who he was dealing with.
