Chapter 2 - The Hospital Alibi

I woke up to the steady, rhythmic beeping of a hospital heart monitor and the overwhelming scent of clinical antiseptic.
Everything hurt, from the deep lacerations on my arms to the fractured ribs binding my chest.
A uniformed police officer was standing near the foot of my bed, holding a small notepad.
Right next to him stood my son Marcus, performing the role of the devastated, heartbroken child with sickening perfection.
"She just stumbled, Officer, and before I could catch her, she went right through the glass," Marcus lied, wiping a fake tear from his eye.
The officer nodded sympathetically, writing down every word of the fabricated story.
I slowly opened my eyes and let out a weak, pathetic groan to draw their attention.
Marcus instantly rushed to my side, grabbing my hand with a forceful grip that warned me to keep my mouth shut.
"Mom, oh thank God you are awake," he whispered, his eyes flashing with a hidden, violent threat.
I looked at the officer, then back at my son, making a rapid tactical decision.
"What happened?" I asked, forcing my voice to tremble and sound perfectly confused.
"I can't remember anything, everything is just a terrible, blurry fog."
Marcus exhaled a massive sigh of relief, clearly thinking my age had caused temporary amnesia.

The officer smiled gently and told me to rest, assuring me that my loving son was taking great care of me.
I closed my eyes again, mentally preparing for the brutal war I was about to wage from this hospital bed.
