Chapter 12 - Checkmate

"That... that is a deep fake!" Marcus stuttered frantically, pointing a trembling finger at the laptop.
"You manipulated that video, Arthur, this is extortion!" he yelled, desperately trying to salvage the situation.
Vanessa nodded furiously, tears of genuine panic finally welling up in her eyes.
"We love Margaret, we would never do something like that, you set us up!" she cried dramatically.
I slowly stood up, leaning heavily on my silver cane, and looked my son dead in the eyes.
"You really think I am that stupid, Marcus?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet but echoing off the glass walls.
"You thought I was just a frail, helpless widow waiting to die so you could steal my sanctuary."
I pulled out my phone and tapped a single button, sending a signal to the adjoining room.
The side door opened, and two uniformed police officers stepped into the conference room, accompanied by a seasoned detective.
"Marcus and Vanessa Vance, you are both under arrest for elder abuse, fraud, and attempted manslaughter," the detective announced.
Marcus tried to run, knocking over his expensive chair, but the officers tackled him instantly.
Vanessa completely broke down, dropping to her knees and sobbing hysterically as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists.

I watched them being read their rights, feeling absolutely no pity, no regret, and no sorrow.
They had dug their own graves, and I merely handed them the shovels.
