Chapter 10 - The Fake Closing

The day of the fake closing arrived with bright, sunny weather that felt entirely inappropriate for a betrayal.
Marcus and Vanessa dressed in their finest clothes, looking like they had already won the lottery.
They strutted into Mr. Vance’s upscale real estate office, completely high on their own arrogance.
Mr. Vance greeted them warmly, offering them sparkling water and directing them to a massive glass conference table.
A thick stack of heavily legal contracts sat in the center of the table, waiting for their signatures.
"Now, before we finalize the transfer of funds, we just need to verify the original deed," Mr. Vance stated smoothly.
Marcus proudly slid the forged, botched document across the polished glass table.
"My mother signed it over to me last week, everything is perfectly legal," Marcus stated confidently.
Mr. Vance examined the signature, slowly shaking his head in mock confusion.
"That is very strange, Marcus, because the county clerk rejected this transfer yesterday."
Vanessa's smile instantly dropped, her manicured nails digging into her expensive leather purse.
"What do you mean rejected?" she snapped, her voice pitching an octave higher.
"I mean, there is a legal freeze on the estate, initiated by the true owner of the property," Mr. Vance replied, leaning back in his chair.

Before Marcus could formulate a lie, the heavy oak doors of the conference room swung open.
I walked in, dressed in a sharp designer suit, leaning slightly on a silver-tipped cane, looking like a queen reclaiming her throne.
