Chapter 1 - The Shattered Sanctuary

The sharp, agonizing sound of shattering glass filled the night air as my body crashed through the patio door.

Jagged shards rained down on me, slicing into my skin like icy daggers.

Pain exploded in my back, stealing the breath from my lungs in one violent gasp.

I lay there on the cold, wet concrete, the torrential rain instantly soaking through my clothes.

Through my blurry vision, I saw Marcus and Vanessa standing in the warm glow of the kitchen, frozen in sheer panic.

Neither of them rushed forward to help me.

Instead, I heard Vanessa’s shrill voice cutting through the heavy sound of the storm.

"Are you crazy, Marcus, what if she's dead?" she shrieked, pacing back and forth in the kitchen.

Marcus ran his hands through his hair, his eyes darting wildly around the room before settling coldly on my broken form.

"We tell them she slipped on the wet floor," he muttered, formulating his dark alibi while his own mother bled.

"It was a tragic accident, just a frail old woman losing her balance in the dark," he continued, rehearsing the sinister lie.

They didn't even bother to call for an ambulance for another agonizing ten minutes.

I kept my eyes closed, letting the freezing rain wash over me as I committed every single word they said to memory.

They truly believed I was unconscious, defeated, and entirely broken.

They had absolutely no idea that this fall was the precise moment my motherly love finally died, replaced by a cold, unstoppable thirst for justice.
